- - and come back 'cos you need a forum, only to find all the forums I've tried are dying? What's happening, is social networking killing them all off?

Used E-Blah very successfully in the past (with help from Martin and Justin) but I gather most forum software is ceasing development, and also so is the very best free one - E-Blah?

any thoughts/comments anyone?

Still 100% behind it here too.  Just wish I had the skills to help enhance it...

I am still writing hotfixes for my forums and updates (nothing suitable for release since they are all just minor fixes to apply to my forums). If anyone needs anything minor let me know and I will try and figure out how to do it since there aren't a lot of modders around anymore

I may be interested in participating with development and enhancements.  The only major issue with E-Blah (besides the name in my opinion) from a technical perspective is that it uses a large number of files which can potentially use up a large number of inodes and of course there is the overhead of opening up a new file to read each new topic which gives it a performance hit.  However, with the modern cpu's and cacheing available today the performance really shouldn't be much of an issue.  It surely could be measured to be slower, but in real use participants likely cannot detect any difference.  You'll likely wait longer for images and icons to download than the time it takes for the OS to open a file on disk and retrieve the info.

There is always the SQL version of E-Blah but I am not sure about the features. You raise a good point.

I'm kinda' glad I started this thread, interesting to see there's still such a lot of support for e-b here. Again though, I've looked at a few others and support there is tailing off also, as I said, maybe the tweets and books are taking younger folks away from plain vanilla forums.

Suffice to say, I need a forum to act as a back-up and maybe eventually take over from a hosted service. My thinking is to download e-b and play with it again, leaving it in place and ready to go so that I don't have a panic on my hands if and when the current hosting service goes into death mode.

I've never used the Platinum versions, it was pre those I used e-b,  Is/are there any major problems starting from scratch with the latest downloads - might I need to get Justin or Martin to do the install? I'm even more of a "Silver Surfer" than I was back then, pushing 70 now, and not so bright as I was

The Platinum version is fine and dandy, and if you have used a previous version you will find your way awround it easy enough. You will have no issues with a new clean install

I have added E-Blah to GitHub. If there is anyone interested in contributing please let me know! I'll be active enough to merge any new code into master if anyone wants to work on it.
